UGT & ICT International have been working closely together for many years to bring best monitoring technologies to scientists and managers of agriculture and the natural environment. This to enable a better understanding of water and water fluxes in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. These topics grows in importance as the with population pressure and climate change understanding and management of water becomes ever more critical.
Lysimeters are a proven tool for ecosystem studies. They are the reference system for matter and energy fluxes in rather undisturbed systems. Big enough to provide a root space for representative plant stands, they measure precise and detailed enough to describe fluxes at high resolution. Pesticide leaching, and greenhouse gas emissions can be quantified for the well defined lysimeter volume.

ICT International manufactures instrumentation which is key to measuring the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum, enabling in-situ real time measurement of sap flow (SFM1) and plant water potential (PSY1) in absolute terms. ICT International products are specifically designed to be deployed in rugged field environments, use low-power, have wireless and internet connection. These instruments have been installed around the world – from the Amazon rainforests to the Canadian Permafrost.
In 2019 ICT International released a suite of integrated IoT enabled sensing solutions designed specifically to measure the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. IoT monitoring systems offer new opportunities for monitoring and management in many diverse applications such as ecophysiology research, commercial orchard production and lysimeters. This workshop will provide an overview of these new technologies and training in their use. Also future monitoring and management opportunities from IoT technologies.

About the instruments
The MULTI-COLOR-PAM fluorometer provides an unprecedented colour range of measuring and actinic light including white and far-red light sources. The various colours enable researchers to tailor conditions of fluorescence measurements exactly to the spectral properties of their sample. Therefore, the MULTI-COLOR-PAM fluorometer opens the way to study many wavelength-dependent aspects of photosynthesis.
The DUAL-KLAS-NIR breaks new ground in analysing photosystem I. Furthering the concept of the DUAL-PAM-100 it uses four wavelength pairs in the near infrared (NIR) to define the redox states of P700, Plastocyanin (PC), and Ferredoxin (Fd) at high temporal resolution. The DUAL-KLAS-NIR does not only offer state of the art instrument design but also a novel signal deconvolution approach. The PC and Fd signals of the DUAL-KLAS-NIR potentially yield insight into cyclic electron transport around photosystem I (PS I). Knowing the exact redox state of Fd will help to monitor stromal reductants. The software is optimised for straightforward determination of the spectral properties of a sample following a fixed protocol. Subsequently, the DUAL-KLAS-NIR can be handled like a single channel instrument.

ArboStApp Mobile Tree Safety Evaluation:
iOS/Android/PC/Mac program for the determination and comparative evaluation of:
ArboStApp allows tree experts to determine the loss in load carrying capacity due to defects in cross sections (of stems and branches) or root damage (by trenching and/or decay) in relation to canopy size and expected wind-loads. In addition, ArboStApp estimates resulting load reduction by crown pruning. in order to achieve sufficient safety in damaged trees. The inputs can be based on visual observations and help estimating required load reduction which is sufficient for many tree assessment purposes. However, the precision of the evaluation can be increased by putting in results from proper sonic tomography or resistance drilling with density-calibrated devices.
Sessions included in the program are designed to support the content from the secondary science syllabus, provide professional development supporting secondary science education and present smart science, smart living and the science feeding the world and saving the planet.
